Cellular Shade R Value

    cellular shade
  • (Cellular Shades) Also called Honeycomb Shades. Available in single or double cell, blackout and varying pleat sizes, these shades are constructed for maximum energy efficiency by combining two or more sections of pleated fabric to form a honeycomb appearance from its side view.

  • (Cellular Shades) Cellular Shades, also referred to as honeycomb shades, trap air in the "honeycomb" structure to limit the amount of warm air that escapes and acts as a buffer to prevent cold air from getting in.

  • (Cellular Shades) A window blind is a type of window covering which is made with slats of fabric, wood, plastic or metal that adjust by rotating from an open position to a closed position by allowing slats to overlap. A roller blind does not have slats but comprises a single piece of material.

    r value
  • In computer science, a value is an interpretation of a sequence of bits according to some data type. It is possible for the same sequence of bits to have different values, depending on the type used to interpret its meaning.

  • The capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power

  • The R-value is a measure of thermal resistance used in the building and construction industry. Under uniform conditions it is the ratio of the temperature difference across an insulator and the heat flux (heat flow per unit area, ) through it or .

  • The Lankford coefficient (also called Lankford value or R-value) is a measure of the plastic anisotropy of a rolled metal sheet.

Foam It Up

Foam It Up

Fiberglass has been the standard for home insulation. Now polyurethane or cellulose foam spray is getting a lot of play--particularly when we renovate.

Oddly, foam has the same R-value (heat transfer resistance) as fiberglass. Also, it's significantly more expensive. So why are we recommending it? Because it works much, much better. It cuts your utility bills. And you can get a $1500 tax credit for using it.

Foam insulation expands on contact as it is installed and, because of that, creates a very tight air seal inside wall cavities. It fills in all the joints, crevices and areas where pipes and wiring pass through. So the effective R-value of foam insulation performs at a much higher level due this air sealing property. Heat can't sneak around the insulation barrier on air currents as the building "breathes".
